Nine Mile Canyon - Take Three

Things I missed the first and second time through the canyon.

  • Binoculars are very helpful for viewing the rock art high up.

The Hostage Panel - Next to road at road level - About 9.4 Miles
About 10.4 Miles on the left side of Balanced Rock
I tried to look for the owl panel in Current Canyon, but I got halfway there (.31 Miles) and found a big boulder in the way. Since I had my dog with me and wouldn't be able to lift him over it, I turned around. I'll have to try it another day. This site is referenced in Chuck Zehnder's "Guide to Nine Mile Canyon."

This one made me go "hhhhhmmmm...."
About 9.4 Miles at eye level

Rasmussen's Cave - About 22.2 Miles
Just to the right of Rasmussen's Cave

Even farther left from the Big Buffalo site, also the oldest dated inscription in the canyon.

9 Mile Canyon Rock Art - Take Two

Things I missed the first time going through the canyon.

The road in 9 Mile Canyon is now paved almost entirely, which makes for an easier drive. The road is a touch wider and has more areas to pull your car off to the side so you can go explore. (Always respect private property signs.)

Helpful hints:
  • Binoculars are very helpful for viewing the rock art high up.
  • The best time to photograph rock art is mornings, late afternoon, and overcast days. The midday sun is not very helpful.
