USAC/Dry Fork Canyon Rock Art Tour - McConkie Ranch

Utah Statewide Archaeological Convention 2011 - Vernal, Utah

(Day 2) - Tour lead by Ronald Heath.

McConkie Ranch

The McConkie Ranch is privately owned. Jean McConkie McKenzie was born and raised on The McConkie Ranch. She and her late mother, Sadie McConkie, have tried to protect the rock art from being vandalized and have done a good job protecting the site. This rock art has long been exposed to the weather. The drawings date from 100 to 1200 A.D.

*Note the necklaces and belts some of the figures are wearing. Also note some of the figures are holding severed heads in their hands.

This is a faded figure holding a severed head in his right hand.

This figure has unusually large feet.

Looking way up on the wall, there is a man fighting a bear?

  1. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures; I am falling in love with Utah through the lens of your camera! I am a New Yorker, but a Southwesterner at heart. I have been out to NM and AZ a few times, tho never Utah; I hope to someday soon, and your pics and info serve as great guidelines. Look forward to more and more....
